JOHNSON HALL, GAYNOR SCIENCE CENTER

CSArch joined Herkimer College to complete the first renovation project since this 20,000 SF science center was originally constructed in the 1960s. The finished project delivered state-of-the-art laboratories to promote student and faculty engagement.

Additional Learning Spaces

The renovation resulted in one additional laboratory, a clean room, walk-in cooler, and a secure chemical storage room to enhance student and faculty recruitment and improve the college's science program.

Corridor Improvements

Special consideration was given to the main corridor to provide the science department with an identity. Original student lockers were removed and the alcoves were replaced with benches to give students a place to socialize before and after class.

Project Scope

To deliver a state-of-the-art science center, an entire wing of Johnson Hall, comprised of existing laboratories and prep rooms, was gutted to create new instruction and experimentation laboratories, preparation rooms, and storage rooms. In collaboration with Herkimer College, we also developed a fundraising campaign, The Elements, to create a much-needed sense of identity within the science department. The campaign helped fund the project and created an impactful vision design component that now defines the Gaynor Science Center.

In addition to laboratory renovations, building systems were replaced and relocated to meet current codes. Dedicated outdoor air supply systems provide ventilation, minimize cross contamination between lab spaces, and improve health and safety for building occupants.
