PERNA SCIENCE BUILDING ADDITION AND RENOVATION

The expansion of the sciences at SUNY Oneonta and the need for a variety of modern research spaces prompted a complete renovation of the existing Perna Science Building originally constructed in 1964.

Modern Laboratories

Existing laboratories and classrooms required renovations to meet today's standards. New specialized research spaces include an animal vivarium, aquatic research lab, biology and geology labs, a meteorology lab, molecular cell lab, planetarium and a museum.

Active Learning Spaces

The science building renovation included a cantilevered observatory addition at the third level to support the college's meteorology program. CSArch also renovated the two existing greenhouses to improve geology and biology programming needs.

Project Scope

As SUNY Oneonta's science program grew, the existing three-story Perna Science Building required renovations and small additions to accomodate the expansion and modernize the space.

The college's Biology and Physics departments were relocated to allow the Earth Science and Biology departments to expand into the building's 78,000 square feet. The renovated facility provides lecture halls, classrooms, office space, and specialized research labs, as well as a roof-top observatory and greenhouse addition. HVAC systems were completely replaced to improve ventilation and energy efficiency, and existing windows were replaced with a high performance glazing system.
