Built in 1963 and essentially unchanged from that era, the Gordon Science Center has exceeded the limits of its ability to support the enormous growth in the University's science programs and the rapid advances in research and technology that afect instruction in biology, chemistry and related programs. CSArch partnered with Page to program and design a new building addition to support research and teaching laboratories. The project includes full-scale redesign and renovation of science research laboratories; teaching laboratories; classrooms; support rooms; faculty office; and an auditorium and lecture hall.

The modernized building will provide a world-class teaching and research environment for students and faculty, greatly improving educational and employment opportunities for the next generation of scientists and researchers.

Academics, Athletics, and Performance Spaces

Laboratory Support Space

The completed addition houses state-of-the-art laboratory and prep space for genetics and molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry, animal physiology and animal behavior, and human anatomy and physiology.

Open Main Lobby

The main lobby is a double height space that brings the exterior in. At the lower level, the outdoor planter extends into the space to form a rock garden under the stair.

Outdoor Courtyard

A new outdoor courtyard was created between the existing science building and new addition. A glass-enclosed walkway provides a protected connection between both facilities.

Prep spaces were designed to support each related science program with fixed casework, sinks, fume hoods, and safety features including an emergency shower and eyewash and OSHA compliant chemical storage.
Each lab includes variable volume fume hoods, which were inadequate and inefficient in the previous building, to protect student and faculty health and well-being.
The standard teaching wall in each lab can be moved to expose additional storage space behind the whiteboard.
Lab furniture are organized to provide good visibility of the teaching wall while allowing for hands-on learning in groups or individually.

Building Technology

Engineering Design

CSArch also provided MEP Engineering design, which focused on health and safety for building occupants, improved energy efficiency, and seamlessly integrates into the architectural design of the building
