The Wild Center

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SYSTEM

Supported by a NYSERDA grant, the Alternative Energy System at the Wild Center is New York State’s first highly efficient, commercial-sized, wood-pellet gasification boiler and integrated solar thermal system.

Wood Pellet Gasification
The 1.7 Million BTU wood pellet heating system is projected to be the primary heating source and provide over 50 percent of the Wild Center’s energy needs during peak demand periods and considerably higher percentages in the shoulder seasons.

Project Scope

Supported by a NYSERDA grant, this is New York State’s first highly efficient, commercial-sized, wood-pellet gasification boiler and integrated solar thermal system.

Designed using a recycled shipping container, the wood pellet storage structure is tipped on its edge to promote gravity flow of wood pellets while simultaneously providing an appropriately pitched roof platform for the thermal solar system. The container’s small footprint allows native grass and plant growth around and under the structure.
